After 17 days as a pilgrim thinking about Rome, today was my day to explore the city like a tourist. I got up super early to get some photos of St. Peter’s Square (before the Jubilee crowds arrived), then made my way all around Rome to visit all the places I’d read about but never seen with my own eyes.

In addition to a very full day of sightseeing, I got some fantastic gelato at Guttilla Alta Gelateria Italiana. And I capped off my evening with a celebratory dinner with Andreas and Catherine, so we could compare notes on all the places we enjoyed in Rome before saying our goodbyes.

Tomorrow, I fly to Oviedo, Spain to begin the 320-kilometer Camino Primitivo

Early morning stop at St. Peter’s Square under some stormy looking skies
St. Peter’s Basilica (minus the crowds)
Walking across the River Tiber
Statues and fountains are everywhere you turn in Rome
I enjoyed walking around the exterior of Castel Sant’Angelo – the towering rotunda where Hadrian’s ashes were placed in 138 A.D.
Piazza Navona had my favorite fountain in the city
Piazza Narvona
The Pantheon, which has the world’s largest unreinforced dome
Ruins of then Roman Forum
The Colusseum
