August 30-31, 2025

  • Start: Eugene, Oregon (USA)
  • End: Geneva, Switzerland
  • Distance flown: 8,830 km (5,475 miles)

These two days were my travel days from North America to Europe. As with many trips these days, there was a hiccup on the way. All the legs of my US travel (Oregon-Denver-Washington, D.C.) went off without a hitch. But my plane in Washington, D.C., had mechanical issues, so I departed the U.S. three hours late. Luckily, this was the last leg of my outbound journey, so I didn’t miss any connections in Europe. Once my overnight, trans-Atlantic flight arrived in Geneva, I spent a full day sightseeing.

A 3-hour delay in Dulles meant it would take me 20+ hours to fly from home to Geneva
Taking a stroll through Geneva after my arrival
The iconic ferris wheel on Lake Geneva’s waterfront
Feeding the ducks
Daschunds are VERY popular in Geneva. I witnessed upwards of 50 people walking their daschunds (which are called “teckels” there) on my Sunday afternoon stroll through the city!
The famous Le Jet d’Eau, which pumps water nearly 500 feet into the air and is a quintessential Lake Geneva sight
The mausoleum of Duke Charles II, who bequeathed his entire fortune to the city of Geneva in 1879.
A fancy fountain with a griffin
Accidentally stumbling upon a marker for the Camino de Santiago (aka Chemin de St Jacques) on the streets of Geneva
The magnificent Four Seasons Hotel (much fancier than where I stayed!!

Highlights

  • I made it to Switzerland 🇨🇭
  • Walking around Geneva and seeing the sights on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon at the end of August

Challenges

  • Mechanical issues with my airplane at Dulles resulted in a three-hour delay while they swapped out planes. This turned an already long flight into a marathon across nine time zones and two days.
  • I had some severe jet lag while walking around Geneva because I was only able to fall asleep for one hour during my series of flights.
