About the Arizona Trail

Designated as a National Scenic Trail in 2009, the Arizona Trail (or AZT) is a roughly 800-mile trek across the Grand Canyon State from the Mexican border to Utah.

Because of the extremely dry and warm conditions in the desert Southwest, this trail is only safely hiked in the spring and autumn. Spring hikers begin their hike at the Arizona-Mexico border where they can begin with warmer temperatures, and hike north toward the Colorado Plateau and its higher (and cooler) elevations.

The AZT has been on my bucket list for the better part of a decade, but 2022 was finally the year I made it a reality. Below are my daily notes from my thru-hike, my gear list, and some of the many lessons I learned during this thru-hike!
