Colorado Trail Day 17: The Longest Water Carry Yet

  • Start:  Windy Peak area (Mile 272.7)
  • End: West Sheep Creek Trail (Mile 292.6)
  • Miles hiked: 19.9 miles
  • Weather: Cool with plenty of cloud cover all day
  • Elevation:  11,775′ (high point); 10,354′ (low point)

A rocky climb to start the day
Through a forest decimated by beetle kill
Lovely early morning views of the Cochetopa Hills
Tanking up
A bottleneck of hikers at the stream – our last realiable water source for the next 14 miles
A pair of cows checking us out
Mann more curious cows
The afternoon included dirt bikers racing up and down the trail and being a nuisance
And more dang rocks
Rustic fence that corralled zero cows
The storm in the distance will bring rain all night long.
